Do you ever feel like going to the boonies?
I’ve lived in big cities and in the boonies. I have mixed feelings on where to live. And so did Daniel Boone, a true adventurer who personified the Spirit of America. He had mixed feelings about how to preserve the land while civilizing it.
We’re a country full of contradictions. We are adventurous and believe in exploration. We also believe in preservation.
Daniel Boone was influenced by his Native American brothers. He knew how to live off the land while preserving it. He learned to respect Nature while bringing civilization to the West. He was one of the most influential forces in helping America grow west and had mixed feelings about it. As a catalyst in creating a path for others to follow, he became disappointed when others did not respect the land the way he did.
Even though a number of Americans have negatively impacted this land, we are the first country in the world that created a national park to preserve its beauty. By the way, that national park is Yellowstone, an area visited by Boone himself.
The Spirit of America is one of adventure, path finding, exploration and preservation. We have a long way to go but most of us want to do the right thing and protect this beautiful land.
In honor of the 4th of July I’m including here the lyrics of God Bless America and know that Boone would have approved of these lyrics if he had read them:
- While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,
- Let us swear allegiance to a land that’s free,
- Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,
- As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.
- God bless America
- Land that I love.
- Stand beside her, and guide her
- Through the night with a light from above.
- From the mountains, to the prairies,
- To the oceans, white with foam
- God bless America, My home sweet home
- God bless America, My home sweet home
Are you preserving the Spirit of America?
